Providers FAQ
These are the most frequently asked questions for providers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I would love to join GAH and want to make sure I can register as an intern without a license. I do have a supervisor who can supervise me for this.

Unfortunately at this point you cannot join our network because of liability issues. We can only accept licensed mental health professionals at this time. But there are many ways you can join our efforts. If you are currently affiliated with a training institution, please have your surpervisor contact us, at info@giveanhour.org, to see whether your institution can make an arrangement with GAH. You may also want to help with outreach to the mental health community in your area. In addition, if you are interested in volunteering at the organizational level, please contact our administrative assistant, Jessica Grove, at jgrove@giveanhour.org.

I registered a while ago and haven’t heard from you. Do you need something else from me before you can approve my enrollment in Give an Hour?

If you submitted your registration profile, you are done; we will contact you if we need additional information. Sometimes it takes a while to verify our providers and activate their accounts. Each state has a different process for verification, and some take longer than others.

I registered as a provider for your site, but notice that my name does not yet appear as a provider on your site’s search engine.

It takes some time to verify all of our providers. Each state has a different process for verification, and some states take longer than others. This is the reason some providers aren't activated right away and don’t appear in the results of a search in their state.

What are the licensing requirements for various professionals seeking to join GAH?

Social workers must have the highest license the state requires to practice independently. It varies from state to state, but generally the abbreviation is LICSW or LCSW or LCSW-C. Professional counselors must have an LPC or LMHC. Pastoral counselors must be licensed as such or belong to the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Psychologists must have a Ph.D. and a license to practice. Marriage and family providers must have an LMFT

I’m a pastoral counselor. Can I join?

Yes, if you are licensed or if you belong to the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

I am registered as a provider with GAH and tried clicking the link I received through the e-mail registration, but the link didn't work.

Instead of clicking on the link we sent you, try copying the link and pasting it in another browser window.

I can’t figure out how to register on your Web site.

Click on "register" on the right side of the page and follow the steps to create an account.

Does Give an Hour™ provide training on topics that relate to returning vets, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, or the culture of military life?

GAH is working with a number of individuals and organizations to gather training information that we will share with our providers. We are collecting online resources like the National Center for PTSD’s “PTSD 101” (http://www.ncptsd.va.gov/ptsd101/).

How can I help if I’m not licensed?

If you are interested in volunteering, we can use your help at the organizational level. Please contact our administrative assistant, Jessica Grove, at jgrove@giveanhour.org.

What do I do if I am a provider without my own office, who works in an open setting? How can I offer privacy to a client?

We encourage you to check with churches, synagogues, community centers, and similar organizations in your area. If you still need help locating space, please contact us.

Suppose we're consulting with a visitor once a week and he or she wants to move to two or three times a week?

If the provider has time to accommodate a change that is clinically indicated, that is great. The provider might then decide to become "inactive" with GAH for a period of time after finishing the case, to sort of balance the time given. If the provider does not feel that he/she can give the time required, we would assist the client in finding appropriate care–-either with another GAH provider or through one of our other networks.

Suppose a visitor has insurance and wants to underwrite the costs of the additional sessions?

We are offering these deserving men, women, and families free mental health care. It would be inconsistent with our mission to charge someone for some of their sessions. We encourage those who make use of our services to give back in their own communities--in this way they are "paying" for the service they receive by helping someone else in need.

Suppose the visitor has family members or friends he or she wants to refer: can they use their insurance or private pay?

If the individual in need of care is from the military community we encourage our providers to assess the situation using their clinical judgment to determine the best course of action. A family friend who is not connected to the current war in Iraq or Afghanistan could potentially be seen as any client would be--on a fee for service basis. A family member might not be. We would certainly be available to make these determinations on a case by case basis.

Suppose we determine that the visitor needs medication. Whom do we refer the visitor to?

We may soon have providers who are available to conduct medication evaluations but until that time, we encourage our providers to use their best judgment when referring for medication. The soldier or family member may be able to use insurance to seek consultation with a psychiatrist or they may need help locating a mental health clinic for this need.

Suppose we determine that the visitor needs to be hospitalized. What then?

We have a good relationship with DoD and the VA-–we would help you navigate that situation were it to arise to determine the best course of action. We encourage all providers to use their clinical judgment to determine the need for hospitalization--and to follow their usual procedures in these circumstances. A patient's safety is always of primary importance.
